Boruto: A Retrospective Review

Boruto started out promising, but quickly became bogged down with fillers and animation dips.

What Is Boruto?

Boruto is the sequel to the much loved series Naruto and Naruto Shippudden, focusing on the son of Naruto, Boruto. Set 15 years after the end of Shippudden where Naruto has become become Hokage, it follows the character development of the titular protagonist Boruto and his fight against the Ootusuki menace.

What Is The Atmosphere & Setting?

While the original series was focused on the consequences of nonstop war and vengeance, this series is exploring how people who grew up in a time of peace handles the rise of conflict. To go along with that, the entire backdrop of the story is focused around how Boruto and his friends grew up in an era of peace.

This backdrop highlights both the greatest weakness of Boruto, it doesn’t know what it wants to be. The shows bounces between whether it wants to be a slice of life, or a shonen, confusing the fanbase. Looking back retrospectively it probably should have been a slice of life, but that’s a discussion for latter on.

The biggest nitpick about the setting is that the Village Hidden In The Rain is still a mess despite Naruto’s declarations about wanting to help it.

Who Are The Main Characters?

The main characters are the titular protagonist Boruto, Sarada (daughter of Sasuke and Sakura), and Mitsuki (son of Orochimaru). Memes about Sarada being an Uchiha needing glasses aside, the main characters are paradoxically the best and worst part of the anime. Mitsuki is an absolute gem, while Boruto and Sarada bounce off and on.

Boruto is still the worst character in his own anime. The decision to not make the series a slice of life is likely the worst decision from the jump. What’s wrong with Boruto? He is part 1 Sasuke (edgy and emo) without having a reason to act that way
